HP Guests Donate 60 Bikes to KIDS in Cambodia!
Our Hidden Places guests have been on an odyssey through South Asia – to Vietnam, Laos and now to Cambodia. They’ve cycled, hiked and paddled, toured ancient temples; watched monks walking barefoot at dawn to collect alms; and much more….
But today was extra special. They went to a school in a very poor area of Siem Reap, to donate over 60 new bikes to some of the most needy children. Their generous donation will make a huge difference in the lives of the children and their families.
In Cambodia a bike is literally a ride to education:
- Many students have to travel a long distance to school, which is a big deterrent to attendance. A bicycle allows them to get to school and they can take one and sometimes two of their siblings with them.
- The students’ families can also use the bikes to get to clinics and to local markets.
- This initiative supports local families that sell and fix bicycles.
We organized this donation through K.I.D.S International, an NGO founded in 2004 by our dear friends Adrianne Dartnall and Rick Lennert. In Siem Reap we have seen first hand their incredible work to improve the lives of Cambodian families living in extreme poverty. Through very practical and direct ways, K.I.D.S provides housing, clean water, medicine, schools, educational supplies, transportation and small business grants. It has made a huge difference to very many families, and today our Hidden Places group contributed to that in a significant way.
One of the group wrote to me today, “We just left the school where we donated the bicycles. It was very moving and humbling. Thank you for the opportunity to do this! The families and students were thrilled.”
